Lay Aside Every Weight
Title: Lay Aside Every Weight
Reading for December 21: Hebrews 11-12
let us also lay aside every weight...
Hebrews 12:1
A marathoner would never attempt to run with a heavy backpack on his back; neither should we attempt to run our race with extra weight.
There are different things that can weigh us down spiritually. Here are a few big ones:
- Vocation. Climbing the
corporate ladder can consume not only our time, but also our energy and our thoughts. We should work hard but keep it in perspective (1 Corinthians 7:17-24). - Relationships. We need friendships with unbelievers because we are to be salt and light in this world, but we must be careful about close relationships with those who would discourage us from our goal (2 Corinthians 6:14).
- Guilt. Guilt is a good thing, but it can enslave us to our past. We are saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8), and so we should let go of the past so we can press on toward the future (Philippians 3:12-14).
Lord God, grant us endurance to finish our race. Give us discernment to recognize those things that are weighing us down.
