Walking With God

Title:  Walking With God

Reading for January 2:  Genesis 5-8

Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.
Genesis 5:24

A little boy had studied about Enoch in Bible class. When his mother asked him what the story was all about, he told her that Enoch walked with God. He walked, and walked, and walked, and walked, and walked, and walked, and after walking a long way God said to Enoch, "We're a lot closer to my house than yours, so why don't you just come home with me?"

As children of God, we want to walk with our Father, following his steps. Ephesians 5:1-2 says, "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us..." Jesus Christ has shown us the way of love. He has lived a perfect life for us so we might know how we can walk with God.

We are taking a distinctly different path when we walk in this way. In Ephesians 4:17 we are told to "no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds." We put off all selfishness. We bury our pride. We crucify the flesh. This is the only way we can truly walk with God.

The longer we follow this path, walking with our Savior, the closer we come to our final home, God's home. Sometimes we struggle to keep pace. Sometimes we fail and fall down. But God is patient with us, lovingly picking us up so that we might slowly learn how to walk with him.

Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.
