Like Father, Like Son
Title: Like Father, Like Son
Reading for January 8: Genesis 26-28
So Isaac settled in Gerar. When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, "She is my sister," for he feared to say, "My wife," thinking, lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah," because she was attractive in appearance.
Genesis 26:6-7
Have you ever noticed that our children sometimes don't listen to what we say? It doesn't matter how often or how sincerely we say it, they just seem to forget a lot of the advice we give them.
But there are things we say that our kids hear every time. Do you want to guess what that is?
Our example.
Yep, they pay much more careful attention to what we do than what we say.
Abraham is just like any other father. He made some decisions in his life that he deeply regretted later. He was broken just like the rest of us and didn't always set the right kind of example for his son.
So, while he may have lectured Isaac countless times about telling the truth and that he should always trust in God, what Isaac heard from Abraham (loud and clear) was the fact that his father lied about his mother (not once but twice!) because he feared for his life (Genesis 12:11-13; 20:1-2).
The moral to this for fathers (and mothers) is simple: never forget that little eyes are always watching.
Father, help us set good examples for our children!
