God's Unseen Care
Title: God's Unseen Care
Reading for January 3: Genesis 9-12
But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. So Pharaoh called Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go."
Genesis 12:17-19
I wonder if in eternity we will have the ability to look back on our life and see all of the "near misses" where God rescued us from disaster. How many times have I escaped a deadly health crisis, an automobile accident, a terrorist event, a plane crash, or some other human or natural disaster?
And those are just the situations where I would be an innocent victim. What about all of the times where God has intervened in my life and saved me from the consequences of sin? Have I ever lied (as Abram did here) and God providentially swooped in and rescued me from an event that would have altered the entire course of my life? And not just lying, but are there also times where God has spared me from other sins I've committed, whether it be sexual immorality, or thoughtless gossip, or bitter envy, or just pure laziness on my part?
We like to complain when God hasn't intervened and rescued us from suffering. We like to think that we are the sinless, innocent victims when we are going through a difficult trial. But what we fail to see is the invisible hand of God rescuing us from untold pain and suffering that comes naturally from living in a sin-cursed world, and, more than that, the numerous times our God has mercifully rescued us from our own selfish choices.
Father, how many times have you rescued us and we fail to give you thanks? Give us a sense of your continual presence and never-ending care over our lives as you watch over us.
