Knowing God Through Meditation On His Word

Title:  Knowing God Through Meditation On His Word

Reading for June 23:  Psalms 104-106

May my meditation be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the LORD.
Psalm 104:34

What is meditation? How do we exercise it? And how does it draw us closer to God?

Biblical meditation is the contemplation of thoughts about God, and the chief way we know about God is through his Word.

"...but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night."
Psalm 1:2

"I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways."
Psalm 119:15

"Oh how I love your law!
It is my meditation all the day."
Psalm 119:97

"I have more understanding than all my teachers,
for your testimonies are my meditation."
Psalm 119:99

Since biblical meditation depends on knowledge of God's Word, we must be regularly reading the Bible. I would encourage you to read with pen and paper in hand. Note key passages that are really speaking to you as you read and write them down. Memorize them. Hide them deep in your heart so you can meditate on them.

Meditation draws us closer to God like few other disciplines can because we're focusing on God's Words in an intimate and personal way. We often read too quickly. We are in a hurry to check our Bible reading off of our "to do" list. Meditation focuses our heart. It slows us down and allows God's Word to truly penetrate our souls.

Father, let your Word truly speak to us this day. Open up our mind and our heart to receive your wisdom.
