Title: Battle Tested
Reading for March 19: Judges 3-5
Now these are the nations that the Lord left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan. It was only in order that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, to teach war to those who had not known it before.
Judges 3:1-2
When I go to the gym (which is not often) I sometimes overdo it. I lift more weight or do more reps than I should. And sometimes I get injured as a result.
This also happens when I decide to go out with kids half my age and play basketball or soccer. I’m making movements that I don’t normally make and putting too much stress on muscles that are not properly trained to do what I’m asking them to do. Again, the result of this is sometimes injury.
There is a spiritual parallel here. When weaknesses in our faith are under attack, God is preparing us for future conflict. Just like lifting a weight in the gym or pushing our muscles to perform on the athletic field, when we are pushed spiritually we are given an opportunity to grow. God is testing us and training us. God is disciplining us through spiritual conflict. And our faith is made stronger because of it.
Look at whatever trials or conflicts or frustrations you face today with a view toward growth. And remember that God is on your side. He’s not abandoned you or forgotten you. As a loving Father he is putting you through tests so that day by day you might become more like his Son!
Father, help us to see the trials we face today as opportunities to grow!
